5 Benefits of Small Business Blogging

Though Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn have garnered most of the attention in the social media world, don’t count out blogging just yet. In fact, a December 2011 eMarketer survey of US marketers found that blogging was the social media platform poised to see the most growth in 2012. Maintaining a small business blog takes some time and effort, but its many rewards make it well worth it. Here are a few benefits of small business blogging that just may make you want to take the plunge.

1. It provides fresh content for your website
If your business website is like most, its content is a little on the stale side. Visitors need a reason to keep coming back, and old, never-changing content won’t cut it. With a blog, you’re adding content to your website on a regular basis, keeping it fresh and up-to-date, and ensuring that you have a strong online presence.

2. It establishes your credibility
With a business blog, you are offering your expertise to the world. You’re able to show how well you understand your industry and provide solutions to problems others may have, thus positioning yourself as an authority. In short, a business blog establishes you as a credible expert in your field that others look to for insights and advice.

3. It positions you and your website as a resource
Once you’re established as an expert, you become an industry resource for others, including the media. You’ll be seen as a viable source of information, not just about your company, but your field as a whole, which can lead to coverage in a variety of media. Your blog will also be viewed as an archive of sorts, with information on industry issues, developments, and trends.

4. It builds community
Websites are forms of one-way communication; they basically just broadcast your marketing message to whoever visits. By adding a blog, however, you invite those visitors to interact with you and others via the comments section. A well-written business blog enables current and potential customers to connect with you and each other, establishes a community on your website, and keeps your visitors coming back for more.

5. It boosts search engine optimization
With a blog, you are continually adding fresh content to your website, and Google loves websites that are constantly being updated. Using the right keywords properly within your blog posts can also help your site rank highly for those keywords in the search engines. Blogs can serve as “link bait,” too, drawing highly-desired inbound links that will further improve search engine rankings.

The benefits of small business blogging far outweigh the drawbacks, so it’s worth the effort to add a blog to your website. It’ll help build your company’s online presence, and will more than likely bring in more sales down the line.
