Do You Need a New Website?

Having a website is one thing. Having a working website that drives traffic to your business and effectively communicates with your customers is another thing. Just because you currently have a website, doesn’t mean you are effectively marketing yourself online. An out of date website can cause huge damage to your business and your reputation. Here are 5 simple pieces of criteria you should use to see if you website is in need of an update.


1. The 5 Second homepage test:


This actually has two parts to it. First, if your website is so out of date that it takes more than 5 seconds to load, it may be time to consider upgrading your website. Many online consumers are very impatient when it comes to searching online for businesses. If they have to wait an extended time for your website to load, chances are many of these consumers are going to leave your website and go to your competition.

The other part to this 5-second homepage test is whether after 5 seconds on your homepage, your customer knows what to do with your website. Again, online consumers want information and they want it fast. If these consumers go to your website and don’t know what to do after 5 seconds, they are going to most likely leave and go to another businesses website.


2. Are there effective calls to action?


Going along with the 5-second homepage test, one of the best ways to get a consumer started and engaged on your website is to have strong calls to action that will drive these consumers to perform a measurable action. For instance, you could have a sign-up form for a free quote or consultation, or you could even do something as simple as having a sign up field for a weekly newsletter. The point is, if your website has no way to engage your customers and track their actions, your website serves almost no purpose.


3. Do your links take you where they say they go?


There are few things more annoying online than clicking on an interesting link only to find that the link is either broken or the link takes you to a page that doesn’t exist anymore. Not only will this discourage consumers about your business, but it will also severely drive down your SEO rankings. If you have a lot of broken links, it may be time to look at a website upgrade.


4. Are your SEO tactics up to date?


Search Engine Optimization tactics are constantly changing. Even if you put an SEO plan in place 2 years ago, it may be already grossly out of date. These days a lot of the search engine algorithms that determine the rankings for how visible your website is on search engines are totally different than the algorithms that were used even just a few years ago. If you are running tactics that are out of date, there is a high probability that your competition is being found above you.


5. Are you able to track traffic to your website?


One of the most important tools that your website NEEDS to have is a way to track who is visiting your website and how they are engaging with your website. If you are able to find out who is coming in, you will be able to hit these leads with future marketing efforts. However, if your website doesn’t have this functionality you are missing out on an awesome marketing tool!


An out of date website can yield very minimum marketing results and could even damage the reputation of your business! If your website doesn’t fulfill one or more of these criteria, it may be time for you and your business to start looking at upgrading your existing website.
