Getting Organized: Planning Website Content the Right Way

Planning and constructing a website takes a TON of work. There’s the overall design to make, navigation to construct, e-commerce to set up, databases to connect to and many many more aspects to building a website. However, one extremely important piece of planning can sometimes fall by the wayside,¬†Content Planning. Sometimes referred to as information architecture, content planning is process of planning where content should be included in a website, where it should go, how it should be accessed, and monitoring of the content after posting. Planning your content before the construction of your website will save you a lot of headaches down the road by ensuring that the flow of the website makes sense and that all of the content is easy to find by both visitors and search engine bots. here are a few helpful tips for getting your content organized before a site launch.

Brain Dump:

Before you can get your content organized, you need to have your content in the first place! Before even thinking about organization of your website, you need have a strong idea about what content you will actually need. Get a whiteboard, blackboard or even a piece of paper and write down any and every piece of content that you think you will need. Don’t worry about limiting yourself at this point, get all of your ideas down on paper and we will focus them coming up. At this stage you should be thinking about content such as: product/service descriptions, pricing explanations, how-to videos, menus, contact info, directions, etc, whatever you think you will want to display on your website!


Once you have all of the content you think you will want, the next step is to get all of that content organized. During this step you should be thinking about the rough architecture of the site, what steps will visitors have to take to reach the content.

A great way to do this is with a method called a card sort. Write down each bit of content that you think should be on your website on a separate note card. When this is done, you can lay out all of the cards on a table and start shuffling them around until you get them in an order that makes sense.

In addition to getting your content in order, it is important that you start to narrow down your content and eliminate content that either doesn’t fit or is not necessary. Less is more for website content. Visitors want the information they are looking for and they want it fast. Having to wade through tons of information to get to the content you want is a sure way to lose your visitors attention fast.

Plan For More Content

One of the marks of a great website (and of the biggest things Google secretly looks for when indexing sites for search results) is lots of fresh content consistently uploaded to the site. This means when planning your content, your site architecture must be designed in way that will allow your business to get new content on the website in a simple and timely fashion. This means making the navigation and architecture of the site as simple as possible.

A fantastic way to get new content up on the website consistently is a blog. No matter when business you are in, a blog is a very strong method for getting great keyword-loaded content to your site. Even blogging as little as once or twice a month is enough to make a big difference!

Monitor Content

Finally, after your website is designed, developed, and launched, its time to monitor! Using a service such as Google Analytics is absolutely critical for gaining an understanding about what content is bringing in results and what content is useless. If you find that certain pieces of content are doing little to nothing for your Analytics, dump them. If you are noticing good trends with certain kinds of content, start to promote that content more heavily and build more content like it!

Also be sure to experiment with different kinds of content as well. Try blog posts, testimonials, reviews, how-to videos, etc. You never know what little piece of content might be a gold mine!
