How to Get Comments on Your Business Blog

If you have a business blog, you not only want people to read it, you want them to leave comments, as well. Without them, you may feel as though you’re talking to an empty room. It takes a bit of work to get readers to comment on your blog, but it’s certainly doable. If you hear crickets whenever you publish a blog post, try these tips to get more feedback from your readers.

Make it easy to comment

Make sure you keep the barriers to comment low by using the appropriate discussion settings on your blog. On WordPress, you can just require commenters to enter their name and email address, rather than forcing them to register and log in. Other blog platforms are even more permissive, and have settings that allow pretty much anyone to comment. Remember, you’ll get far more engagement if you don’t force your readers to jump through hoops in order to comment.

Ask for comments

Sometimes it pays to just come right out and ask for comments. A simple “What do you think?” may be enough to prompt users to respond. Even better – a unique request for feedback based on the post content. For example, if your post is about using Facebook for marketing, you could ask a question such as “How do you use Facebook to attract customers?” An invitation to comment may be just the ticket to getting a good conversation going.

Respond to comments

Speaking of conversations, be sure to respond to each comment if you can. By replying to comments, you’ll be continuing the conversation and fostering a relationship between you and your readers. Most blogging platforms allow you to be notified by email whenever someone leaves a comment, so there’s no excuse for not replying in a timely manner.

Run a contest

Contests can be a great way to encourage comments, especially from first-timers. The prize doesn’t have to be expensive; a $10 gift card may be enough of an incentive. Let’s face it, sometimes a little bribery can help, and as long as you’re fair when choosing the winner, there’s no problem.

Create a safe environment

It’s important to make sure that commenters are comfortable with giving their opinion. You don’t want to allow people to be mean or hateful, but it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be able to disagree with you or others as long as it’s done respectfully. We’re all different, with varying opinions, and sometimes that makes for the most interesting conversations!

Like social networks, blogs are a great way to build an online community. Follow these tips for getting comments, and you could see your community grow and thrive in no time.
