Should You Invest in Paid Search Engine Optimization?

Every business owner wants his company’s website to rank highly on the search engines. In fact you may think you can handle the job yourself. After all, you just have to throw in a few keywords you want to rank for into the copy, and you’re done, right? Um, no – it takes a lot more than that to properly optimize your website for the search engines. Paying a search engine optimization (SEO) consultant to do the job for you may be a wise business decision for a number of reasons.

First of all, you can’t just add whatever keywords you like to the webpage copy – you need to do some research in order to e the right keywords, and that can eat up time better spent on your business. Though there are software tools that can make keyword research a bit easier, it takes a bit of know-how to use them properly – an SEO consultant is most likely to have the necessary experience to use these tools to their full extent.

An SEO consultant also knows where on each page the content needs to be optimized. Keywords need to be placed not only in the webpage body, but also in the title, the headings, even images should be optimized with the proper keywords. Depending on how your website is set up, this may mean dealing with the underlying code, which can be a little tricky. After all, becoming a web administrator probably wasn’t what you had in mind when you started your business, was it?

And speaking of taking on unwanted tasks, you’ll be spending quite a bit of time trying to keep up with Google sear h changes if you decide to take on SEO yourself. It seems like the search engine giant tweaks its search algorithms every other day, plus there’s the occasional major update that always seems to spread shockwaves throughout the web. Staying on top of these changes can be a second full-time job – and that’s not including monitoring updates to other search engines like Yahoo! and Bing.

So if you’re tempted to handle SEO for your business website on your own, you might want to reconsider and pay someone else to do it instead. Doing it yourself may save you a little money, but outsourcing the task will more than likely save your sanity.
