Tips for Increasing Facebook Fan Engagement

Facebook is a great platform for marketing your small business, but building a great-looking page is just the first step. Fan engagement is crucial for creating a successful Facebook presence, but it can be difficult sometimes to get your page’s fan to participate in the online conversation. Here are a few suggestions for getting visitors to interact more with you and others on your Facebook page.

Post photos, images, and videos
Posting photos, images, videos, and the like typically draws more likes and comments than just plain text status updates, primarily due to their visual nature. Post photos of you and your staff to bring a more personal touch to your Facebook page and provide a behind-the-scenes look at your business. Share videos featuring testimonials from satisfied customers or demonstrations of your products or services. You can also share photos, images, and videos posted on other Facebook pages, if appropriate.

Use the Question tool to take a poll
The Question tool can be a great way of getting people to participate – it can also be used as a market research tool of sorts, depending on the question being asked. This tool also allows fans to add options if you want, plus you’ll probably get additional input in the comments.

Ask fans to caption a photo or fill in the blank
Asking fans to fill in the blank – “My favorite dessert is “______” – or create a caption for a photo is bound to result in a lot of creative answers in the comments. A piece of advice: try to keep it G- or PG-rated so as not to offend too many of your fans.

Ask for feedback on a product or service
Requesting feedback on one of your products or services is a good way to get comments, but it can backfire if some of the feedback is negative. If you choose this option, you’ll need to monitor the comments closely and respond to everyone who gives a review that’s less than glowing.

Conduct a contest
Contests can be a great way to boost fan engagement on your Facebook page, but there are certain rules you must follow when it comes to running a promotion such as a contest or sweepstakes. Your best bet is to use a contest app from a developer such as EasyPromos or Wildfire to administer your contest.
